Whilst we hope people will take their litter home or dispose of it in the correct manner, it just does not happen. Whilst there is the attitude of ‘its not in my garden’ then we are going to have to make provisions to keep our woodland clear of rubbish.
Recent restrictions and charging of landfill mean we will start to see more and more illegal dumping in our woods. This is a fact of life and we should be vigilant to ensure we try to minimise our exposure.
Traditionally we have a biannual litter blitz. We ask all members and anyone who wishes to help to assemble on a Sunday morning at predetermined points and then, with provided waste sacks, go pick up rubbish. The bags can be left near to access points where they will be either moved to a more accessible place or picked up directly by the council within a few days for disposal.
Please ensure you register with the person at the marshalling point as they need your names so that you will be covered on our insurance should you have an accident. Whilst it may seem innocuous just picking up rubbish you could easily tread on something which could penetrate your shoes or you could just cut yourself on a bottle. We want to make sure you have someone to claim on in such a case.
We recommend wearing good strong clothing as the bushes might contain thorns. Ideally, sturdy boots and gloves should be worn.
